Chapter 1

The day he turned 18, Ash moved out on his own into a tiny, dark, starter home. It was cramped and lonely, but on most days he enjoyed the solitude. Anything was better than the crowded, noisy, environment of the many orphanage homes he’d been in over the years.

First thing Ash did was head out to explore the town. He got himself a job in music. He’d always felt calmer and more at peace with the world when he was wrapped up in a good song.

He decided he’d go to the park next, although he immediately regretted his decision. All the bright colors and happy people  made him sick to his stomach. Why did everyone have to be so happy all the time? He could hear whispers follow him across the pavement to the chess tables.

“Do you know who that is?” “I hear he blew up Saint Parfait’s Home for Unwanted and Abandoned Children!” “He’s a monster!” “Aaaaaaaah!”

Despite the horrible things being said about him, Ash tried to forget while cooking himself up some hot dogs– Though, they burned and because people were so afraid of him, he had to eat his charred meal alone. No one dared go near him while he ate, but whenever he left he noticed people resuming their activities as if it were now safe to do so.

Ash climbed under the covers that night and tried to have pleasant dreams despite his unpleasant experiences that day, though he just couldn’t shake the dirty looks and horrified shrieks directed toward him. When would they understand that he was just like them?

The next morning Ash woke up early and ate his cereal in the familiar and safe darkness of his own living room. He decided not to let the harsh comments get the better of him and to just have some fun.

Now, if you knew Ash, you’d know that fun includes setting fire to random items in your home just to watch them burn. He never thought his infernos would hurt anyone though, as he always kept them contained. Ashen was always different from everyone else though, he loved fire, it was his only friend. It seemed to smile at him when everyone else would cringe. It never hurt him, unlike the so called friends he made back in foster care. Fire was a beautiful blaze that burned brightest in the darkest of places.

One night, while driving home from work, Ash noticed something peculiar. A woman was standing outside of a house with a notepad and a camera, pestering whoever was inside. Ash, knowing this was very rude, confronted the wretch.

“Excuse me, just what do you think you are doing?”

“Mind your berrywax, boy, I’m going to get this story and you can’t stop me!”

“Like Berry I can’t. Why don’t you get out of here before I show you just how hot I think you are.”

Frightened by the prospect of being burned alive, the woman ran for her life.

Ash made his way up to the door and rang the bell. He wanted to make sure whoever inside was alright before he left.

The moment she opened the door, my heart stopped. Who was this beautiful creature? I  couldn’t believe my eyes. Was I in the presence of an angel?

“Yes?” Her voice was soft and courteous, I almost forgot what I was going to say to her, but luckily my brain caught up with my mouth.

“Miss? I hate to bother you at such a time of night, but I wanted to make sure that that paparazzi didn’t do anything to hurt or frighten you. Are you alright?”

She smiled as she replied, “Oh, I’m doing just fine now. It looks like something scared her off.” She winked at me as she said the word “something” implying she knew exactly what I did. “Care to come inside?”

Not wanting to be rude, I politely declined. “Actually, I was just on my way home, but maybe I could leave my number with you in case she were to… come back?”

“Sure, I’d like that… er…”

“Ashen. Ashen Skies. And you are?”

She laughed. “You don’t know who I am?” She seemed relieved as I shook my head. “I’m Sugar Snaps. Pleased to meet you, Ash.”

The next day, Ash invited Sugar out to Peppermint Pier for some dancing and  drinks. Unfortunately, another nosy paparazzi got word of their little outing and decided to invite herself along. Ash promptly scared her off.

Sugar felt terrible for attracting such unwanted company, but he cheered her up with some fresh, white, lilies.

“Something as beautiful as you should never have to apologize to someone like me.”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“I have to be honest with you, I am no saint.”

“Nobody is perfect.”

“Yes, but I am the farthest from the word.” Ash hesitated.

“You seem like such a nice boy… I don’t understand.”

“Well, you see, I’ve done bad things in my life, and many people are afraid of me. I was actually shocked to find out that you weren’t.”

“Sometimes I wish people were afraid of me. They all think I’d be happy to just toss autographs at them and pose for their stupid pictures all day– It’s ridiculous the amount of attention I get. That’s why I came here, I thought I could start fresh, settle down, start a family. It sounds silly doesn’t it?”

“Not at all. I actually want the same thing.”

The pair talked all night under the stars, enjoying each others company.

The next morning found our heroin dancing on the pier and grinning like a fool. There was no doubting he was happy.

A few nights later, Ash invited Sugar out to the Gardens with him for a lovely evening smelling the roses– literally.

“I must say, Ash, I was very excited whenever you invited me out here tonight. Any particular reason why? It’s a very romantic place for just an outing…”

Ash did invite her out to ask her something, a big question and a major step that he wasn’t sure he was ready for. He tried to force the words out, but they just couldn’t come to him. He was so nervous that his palms were sweating and he began to stutter.

“S-S-Sugar, I-I-I w-w-wanted to ask-k-k, y-you t-to, um-m-m…” He frowned. Why was this so hard? “W-w-will y-you…”

Suddenly, Sugar grabbed his hands and stared deep into his eyes. “Hey, it’s alright. We don’t have to do anything you’re not ready for, okay?”

Ash nodded. “Ok-k-kay.” He wanted to force the words out, but he lost all his nerve whenever the paparazzi showed up and ruined everything. They ended their little get together and promised to meet up in a few nights to talk again.

Sugar met Ash at his house to go to the bookstore where she was going to recommend one of her favorite books to him. Little did she know, tonight would be a very special night.

“Oh, Sugar, I– Let me get changed, I look like a wreck.”

“No, you’re fine. We’re just going to the bookstore, silly.”

Ash laughed nervously. “Right…”

After they left the bookstore, Ash pulled Sugar aside. He pulled her in close and whispered in her ear, “Sugar Snaps, I care about you so much and I had plans to ask you sooner, but I wasn’t ready. Now I know I can commit. Will you go steady with me?”

Sugar smiled and whispered back, “Of course I will!”

Then the two shared a kiss so fiery and passionate that you would swear there were sparks literally flying through the air if you had seen it with your own two eyes.

Her lips tasted sweeter than any candy I had ever tasted before in my life. Now whenever she smiles, I know that it is just for me. It may be too soon to say for sure, but I do believe that I am in love with Sugar Snaps!
